The main complaint I have had is with color. The Nikon software was very sophisticated. I would sit for hours going through the color adjustments. My expectation was that the VueScan Key version would provide that sophistication. It does not. If I use the Color/BW setting I get fairly decent color from the camera, but nothing like the Nikon software. If I use the Flatness setting, I get slightly excessive color. I find the best settings for me are typically the Color, Tone, and Flatness settings all set to the same value. I find that if I lower the Color and the Tone values, and increase the Flatness to reduce the yellowness, I can get pretty good color. If I use the Detail setting at any value the scan is very dark. In my Nikon software I would use detail all the time to make sure I had a good scan. It is not possible on the VueScan version.
