One of the biggest improvements in Lightroom 6.1 is the ability to work with raw, high dynamic range images using the new DNG Standard format. In addition to raw images that have a lot of detail, you can also view the images in the DNG Standard format. You can work with the data in a new panel in the Edit module and export an image directly to a DNG file. For those who shoot RAW/HDR images, this is a good news.

With respect to the iPad, Adobe continues to deliver the best and most complete iOS apps. In the case of Lightroom, the company has released two separate apps: Lightroom for iPad and Lightroom CC for iPad. The main advantages of having two apps, versus the one app you get in Lightroom on the desktop, is that you have an app that behaves more like a native Photoshop application and an app that behaves more like a Lightroom application. For example, you can use Lightroom CC on the desktop and use the Lightroom application on the iPad. However, it is not possible to use Lightroom CC on the iPad.

So, ACR really is five years old. That’s hardly unusual, the latest version of Adobe’s powerful RAW editor has been around for a while, but its user interface is still almost exactly as it was when it was launched. If you want the full story on ACR, a quick visit to a recently-published ACR user guide is in order.

What is unusual, however, is the built-in dialogs that let you create and modify individual images. The second-level menu is gone, and with it the ability to process multiple files simultaneously. Instead, ACR opens each RAW file you drag into the main window one at a time. This does mean you don’t have to wait for each file to be processed before it becomes available, but if you had multiple files to process, it still would.

With the new Adjustment Layers (ALT/OPT) panel, you can easily target an area for adjustments without having to switch tools as you can with the Graduated Filter. Adjustment layers are a great way to target a specific area in a photo for adjustments without affecting the entire photo! You can create manual adjustment layers or use the Adjustment Brush to make all of your adjustments. Once an adjustment layer is created, it is saved as a standard Photoshop adjustment layer (hold ALT/OPT and click on the image, then choose Layer > New Adjustment Layer…). You can also use Adjustment Layer Target to target only a certain area within your image.

The new Add Curves tool is used to easily create, edit, and save complex curves within your image. The curve selection circle is linked to an inverse linear control point tool, which allows you to target the position of individual control points. You can enter multiple points in both the value and location positions by tapping the Tab key while pressing the Space key.

We have some exciting new features to show you. The biggest one is Lens Correction. In previous versions we have actually replaced the camera lens. Now we have a tool that will let you correct lens distortions. It will correct perspective, vignette, and barrel and pin cushion distortion.

There is also the new Lens Profile Editor where you can manually enter values to correct your lens when you do not have the camera. This can be very useful if you are shooting a lot of different lenses or have multiple lenses on your camera.

I understand what you are saying, but there are many features in LR10 that are not in LR9, and mimics is one of them. LR9 and LR10 are two different programs, and Adobe has indicated they are working on merging the two programs in the near future. I have not read that Adobe will NOT introduce this feature to LR9 in the near future. I like that they are so open about this.

Mikey — I’m not familiar with all of Adobe’s plans. I think what Mike said is correct. They have not confirmed that mimics in LR9 is a “Feature” that was planned for LR9. It may be a “Feature” that was not considered when LR10 was designed, and may be considered for LR9 in the future, but it is not a Feature that is currently scheduled to be implemented. I hope that clears up what I was trying to say.

Mikey — I can not confirm nor deny that Adobe has NOT scheduled mimics to be released with LR9, just like I can not confirm nor deny if LR9 will have a separate RAW editor module like LR10. I believe the possibility of mimics being included in LR9 was brought up in the LR forums several months ago, but there was not much interest and it seems that Adobe dropped the idea.

The Lens Correction panel can be used to correct problems with an individual lens. There are several options to correct the lens distortion. You can also correct chromatic aberration. Other features include the ability to adjust the color balance of a lens. You can also use an option to hide the Lens Correction panel.

The Photoshop Camera Raw module has been updated with a new version as well. It now automatically updates and adjusts your camera raw files to use more recent ICC profiles. Adjustments made in Photoshop Camera Raw are directly transferred back to your Camera Raw files.

This version has a new feature called Content Aware Fill. This allows people to paint over images (photos, graphics, etc.) on top of images and bring back details that were either cropped out or were not as detailed as the originals. Content Aware Fill works inside the red or magenta area, so it will bring back much of the original image, which gives your edits more of a wow-factor.

Adobe Lightroom CC was updated earlier this year. The update allowed you to automatically name your image file, rotate thumbnails on your camera roll by auto detecting, change the watermark for your images and more. It also made exporting and printing of images much easier.

More accurate tone mapping. ACR now includes an improved tone mapping algorithm that delivers more accurate and uniform tone maps by making no assumptions about tone mapping without the user selecting a preset.

Improved manual editing tools. ACR now includes two new tools for precise and quick manual editing of images. In addition, ACR now includes a new layer-based manual tool for editing layers and masks and a selection-based tool for editing masks.

Color-managed workflow. ACR now allows you to work with RAW images that have been processed in Photoshop or Lightroom using an ICC color profile. You can import an image into ACR and apply a preset ICC color profile, then edit the image in ACR and preview it in Lightroom or Photoshop. If you need to further edit the image in Photoshop, you can either apply the same ICC profile or import a new ICC profile. You can also use ACR as an “on-the-fly” tone mapping preset for workflows where you would normally export images in a particular profile.

Battery-efficient previews. ACR now includes faster preview previews that use less memory. This results in fewer view button clicks, faster previews, and less of a performance impact on your computer.

Adobe Camera Raw is a program for photographers who use Adobe’s digital cameras, rather than as a standalone RAW conversion program. It supports both RAW files from modern digital cameras as well as Adobe’s original DNG format files (directly from older cameras), and it is necessary if you want to open and edit RAW files from other digital cameras and raw files created with Adobe Camera Raw.

The Smart Lens Profile has been greatly enhanced. You can now use multiple profiles in a single shot, have automatic correction of the profile, and you can preview the profiles before you capture each shot. You can even use the profiles in an underexposed photo.

In editing, the new ‘Luminance Key’ tool is a great tool for adjusting brightness, contrast, and white balance. With this tool you can either choose one of the three settings which you could apply to an entire image or you can choose to apply it only to a certain area. The tool also includes a luminance-only option as well.

The ‘Levels’ tool has been improved. If you are removing noise in an image, you can quickly remove it by first raising the overall exposure by a stop. You can also remove the noise from just certain areas with the adjustment layer.

There is a lot to love about Camera RAW for photographers. The menus are easy to navigate, even on large monitors. The interface is largely identical from version to version, so finding your way around shouldnt be a problem. The dialog boxes are the easiest to use, clean, and straight forward. You can easily find what youre looking for in ACR by moving the mouse from tab to tab and clicking links as you go.

When youre editing a photo, theres a good chance that a camera feature is causing a problem. For example, you might want to pick a color that would look really nice in your subject, but the camera may be using a setting in its metering mode or exposure mode that requires you to change your exposure settings in order to achieve that color. Camera RAW gives you that option in order to really fine-tune your picture.
